DIY Paper Lampshade: Step-by-step Tutorial

I had committed to do a blogpost today in ArtsyCraftsymom's blogs collaboration for Diwali and till today morning I was absolutely clueless what was I going to blog about. And then I saw a picture of handmade paper/lanterns exhibition in newspaper, decided to visit the exhibition and purchase some handmade paper just to try something.

I saw handmade hakoba paper there and decided to make a lampshade out of it. I used two sheets of hakoba paper and one sheet of marble print handmade paper for this lamp. This being my first attempt with lampshade making, it was fraught with errors but still managed to make a shade which stands on its own. While making it I was still unsure whether it will come out as I want but despite mistakes I can say result is not disappointing at all. I made a long shade which is approx. 30 inches tall, you can make a smaller version if you want.

Materials used:

Hakoba Paper: 2 sheetse 

Marble print paper: 1 sheet

Glue

Wooden sticks: 4

Here is step-by step procedure for those of you interested:

Step 1,2: Papers used
Step 3: Cut strips of marble paper and fold in half vertically. Divide hakoba sheets in two pieces each.
Step 4: Glue hakoba on marble strip's one fold, keep other fold standing
Step 5: Similarly glue all strips and hakoba pieces. Do not glue last join.
Step 6: Since my lampshade is quite tall, I glued wooden strips on to the marble strips for strength. If you are making a smaller lamp, you can use cardboard instead of wood.
Step 7: Glue last join also to make a rectangle.
Step 8: Now glue horizonal strips on top as well as bottom. This will help to keep it straight as hakoba paper is a thin paper.
Step 9: A candle lit inside my unfinished lampshade.

Mistakes done: I attached horizontal strips in the end which made them slightly rounded. My advise to those of you trying to make it is please glue horozonal strips before joining vertical strips to hakoba pieces.

Handpainted chopra/roli-chawal stand

I had purchased few particle board shapes and a conch shaped chopra, on my last craft supply shopping spree, without really giving it a thought what I actually wanted to do with them (I know sometimes we crafters really gets greedy hoarding stuff).

My new Venture

So finally It has started :-). After much deliberations, lots of hiccups and many days later; I've started my shop on itshandmade.in. See here.

I chose this lovely pair of red earrings handmade with tatting as my first product.

Papermache fun

During summer holidays I decided to engage kids in some craft work. Thought of making a name board for house as we did not have one and settled on papermache work. 

More Handmade Rakhis

Made more rakhis with crochet (view earlier ones here). First one is having four layers of crocheted flowers and has a crochet string. Another string is woven into crocheted line.

Handmade Rakhis

Raksha Bandhan is falling in August this year. Every year I plan for sending handmade rakhis but could never do it except for few rakhis which I made 2-3 years back (and yes, I did not post them here). This year I wanted to do it and started well in advance. 

Two Frocks - same fabrics

Made these frocks for two little girls using same fabrics. Used satin material along with self worked white tissue. Put cotton lining inside for comfort. Flowers are also hand made.

My Braid Story

I remember having thick, shoulder length and lustrous curly hairs when I was a kid. My hair were so curly that after washing and drying, all my hairs used to gather over my head instead of flowing down. My mother used to oil them and braid them in tight braids, to appease my grandfather as he used to find my gathered hair untidy. Over the years, they lost curls and became wavy (not sure of the reasons but too much of tight braids must have worked their magic) and also became thinner and frizzy.

Air Dry Clay Key Chain

I bought a package of air dry clay from an online store along with some plastic modelling tools. Weekend went into trying this new craft(first attempt). Though I wanted white colored clay, I got a terracota one, never mind :-). 

Bookmarks

I collect stuff  thinking I can reuse that later. Sometimes it is quite difficult to keep them stored neatly as I do not have much storage space(perils of staying in a rented house) but I am unable to throw it away. And when this crafty urge appears, then I really feel happy to have all this around.

Made these bookmarks from old wedding invitation cards which I was having for last 7-8 years.

Earlier I had made some money envelopes also using wedding cards(here).

Elegance and style

Shoppersstop and indiblogger are running a contest to create most stylish look using apparel and accessories from Shoppersstop.com. Thought of trying but could give time only on last day of contest. And here is what  I could decide for this Christmas and New year season.

Relocating.........

Its been long since i've posted any thing and I miss it miserably but another post will take time. We are relocating to Pune and I am busy with everything other than crafts. First it was 'C's school admission, house hunting and now packing.

Summery Kurta for Mother

It is holiday time in school before new session begins and we (me and 'C') went to my parents place for 4-5 days. I love stitching during my visits as my mom also helps me in planning and working on stuff. I stitched one cotton night suit for 'C' and a cotton kurta for my mother as we are gearing up for harsh summer months. Here is my mother's kurta:

 

I used matching blue fabric for design and put buttons made from kurta fabric. Though picture is not very clear. It is showing blue fabric as straight piece while I have made pleats there and then turned them from middle creating 3D effect in pleats. Will ask for a closer shot from my mother and then re-post. 

I loved its final look and now planning for my kurta from same fabric (I had got fabric for two kurtas).

Will be posting 'C's night suit in next post as it still has not got its buttons and button holes. Till then keep spreading happiness........

Kadam Baby.....home decor for babies

Shuchi @Lost in Reverie had organised a give away in January from her online store Kadambaby.com and I loved the puppets she was giving away. I'm generally reluctant to enter in give aways but I really liked her puppets as my son likes to tell random stories to himself :-). I entered there and then forgot completely. One fine day, I came to know from her blog that I'm the winner of her giveaway. Quite amused at my luck, as I consider myself not having any chance at lucky draws, I checked thrice. But it was really me. Then I remembered Shahrukh Khan's dialogue from 'Om Shanti Om', 

"Itni shidaat se maine tumhe paane ki koshish ki hai,
hi har zarre ne mujhe tumse milane ki saazish ki hai."

While I'm writing this post, he is busy telling stories to his Grandpa using them. Thanks a lot Shuchi for your lovely giveaway.

Gift Box Decoration

'C' learnt Gift box packing and decoration for a school competition. Children had to pack a gift box and decorate it in class. He did practice at home and learn step by step method. I gave him a paper, Golden Ribbon (Gota), a fairy, star stickers for decoration and cello tape. He did fairly well in packing (teacher even asked if he had got it packed at home) and pasted all decoration nicely.

 

I made this fairy using nylon stocking and wires. I already had a small doll lying with me (of course recycled from a Rakhi). For added effect, added some flower petals in magenta color, two green leaves(though leaves are hardly visible) and stamens (used in flower making) with a ribbon and golden lace.Here is a closeup of fairy with petals. This was first time I tried using stockings to make things and found it quite easy and satisfying. I hope to continue this in future.

My Experiments in Knitting: 2

Hope all of you lovely ladies (and gents) are doing good. Its been long since I posted here anything. There were many reasons and without going into that detail, I would prefer to show my new creation: A sweater for 'C'.

 

I had bought wool 2-3 years back and kid has grown since then, so you can easily notice I've used fur wool at some places. 

I had planned to use crochet and knitting together for this. After two strips of crochet in front, I got bored of slow process. So crochet strips are in front only (Originally I had planned them for sleeves also).

 

Overall, I'm happy with whole look. 'C'  wanted 'G.one' on it (kids latest obsession). I tried but ended up writing 'Gone'. Does not matter as he is happy with this 'G.one'. And I'm happy with his liking for his new sweater.
